Embracing Diversity in the Conservative Movement
Upholding Values of Love, Acceptance, and Inclusivity in the MAGA Movement
The recent Republican National Convention (RNC) made headlines for featuring speakers who may not have typically been associated with the Conservative or Right Movement. Among these speakers were a pro-feminist with tattoos and a Muslim individual who prayed to Allah "with" everyone.
For years, the conservative movement has been steadfast in its belief that it stands for true love and acceptance. We have consistently declared that we do not discriminate based on race, sexual orientation, or religion, and that everyone is welcome. Therefore, it's disheartening to see some members of the Conservative (or MAGA) Movement express discomfort when someone speaks at the RNC convention who may not fully align with their values.
I have seen Christians who feel conflicted about supporting the Republican Party because they believe it no longer upholds Christian values. While the Republican Party aligns more closely with our values than the Democrat Party, there are concerns about the influence of communists and socialists within the Democrat Party. I once questioned if God had turned away from America, but when I experienced a sense of peace during a dangerous moment at the rally for President Trump, where he was nearly assassinated, I knew God was not done with our nation. Despite disagreements among conservatives and Trump supporters, we believe in loving one another despite our differences. I have faced judgment from some conservatives for the way I color my hair. I was told once that I needed to go back to a natural color to fit in with the conservative movement so I don't get mistaken for a liberal. My response: "Crazy people do not own fun-colored hair. How I present myself has nothing to do with what I believe." Diversity should be embraced within our movement. We cannot preach inclusivity while excluding those who may not fit a specific mold. If we preach, all are welcome, and then gatekeep who can join, we are no better than the socialists and communists parading around the Democrat Party pretending to be liberal.
It is important to remember that in the United States, we have religious freedom. While the country was founded on Christian principles, we can practice any religion. Therefore, respecting and honing the freedoms our founding fathers fought for is essential.
During the convention, the Muslim speaker offered a prayer to her god, a false god in the Christian worldview. It is understandable that, as a Christian, one may not feel comfortable participating in a prayer to a deity they do not worship because our God commands us not to worship or pray to false gods. In this situation, one can put their hands in their pocket or behind their back, keep their head held high, and their eyes open. This way, they can respectfully observe without compromising their beliefs.
It is worth noting that during gatherings of the MAGA movement, Christians often pray to Jesus with the group. In these instances, there may be Muslims or nonbelievers present, so it would be unfair to say that the Muslim speaker should not have prayed in mixed company.
In conclusion, it's crucial to remember that our side advocates for love and acceptance for all individuals, regardless of their background. We must uphold the values of religious freedom and respect all individuals, even if their beliefs differ from ours because you can respect the person without respecting the belief. Practicing what we preach and demonstrating tolerance, love, and understanding toward others, even when challenging, is essential.
